The BMC plans to procure a US-made tarpomatic covering system for the Kanjur Marg landfill; implementation is expected in 60–90 days. Following Bombay High Court directives, civic officials will also study Lucknow’s solid-waste processing project. A special committee recently visited the dumping ground and selected waste-covering technology as an emergency measure.

Mumbai generates about 7,000 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. Nearly 90% is processed at Kanjurmarg, with the rest sent to Deonar. Residents of Vikhroli, Bhandup and Nahur have complained of persistent odours.

The system uses a machine mounted on landfill compactors or dozers to lay reusable tarps over active waste, replacing daily soil cover. It is intended to save airspace, reduce costs, control odours and fire risk, and limit worker exposure.

The State Urban Development Department formed a monitoring committee chaired by retired IAS officer Umakant Dangat, with IIT Bombay experts and others. It will assess waste management, temporary odour and gas controls, grievance redressal, environmental and court-order compliance, scientific upgrades and possible contractor action, and submit recommendations to the High-Level Committee and periodic reports.

The Kanjur Bhandup Clean Advanced Locality Management (ALM) issued a manifesto urging candidates in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election to limit Kanjurmarg landfill use to central suburbs rather than accept waste from across Mumbai. The city generates nearly 6,000 metric tonnes of waste daily; about 4,500–5,500 tonnes go to Kanjurmarg and the remainder to Deonar.

The ALM also called for another east-west connector along the 12 km LBS Road stretch between Ghatkopar-Andheri Road junction and Sonapur Junction, Mulund. Gandhi Nagar Junction in Vikhroli is currently the only crossover. Suggested options include Vikhroli ROB and Kanjur underpass.

Shiv Sena announced sitting Bhandup MLA Ramesh Korgaonkar as its candidate. ALM office bearer Shirish Daudkhane said its six large housing complexes each have 500–1,000 families, and the manifesto would be circulated to their managing committees and candidates. Office bearer Snehal Basrur said the ALM has represented local civic needs since its 2019 inception.

Bulldozers demolished approximately 150 hutments and commercial structures in Amar Nagar, Mulund on Sunday to clear land for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project.

BMC survey conducted in 2022 found 295 residential and commercial structures eligible for rehabilitation and 89 ineligible in the first phase. Eligible beneficiaries received keys to rehabilitation flats in Kanjurmarg from May 27 onwards. Seven 23-storey rehabilitation towers are being developed; two are already operational for relocation.

Demolition included structures of ineligible residents and approximately 18 commercial establishments. Ineligible residents received demolition notices on April 6 and May 20.

Residents claimed survey discrepancies and exclusion errors. One resident since 1982 was not counted in survey. Another resident since 1991 claimed all documents were submitted but name was missing from final list. A shopkeeper listed as eligible reported no clarity on rehabilitation.

Some beneficiaries could not take possession of 300 sq ft Kanjurmarg flats due to approximately ₹40,000 possession charges. Relocated residents reported malfunctioning lifts, non-working taps, and leakage issues in rehabilitation buildings.

BMC said demolition was necessary to complete pre-construction work before monsoon to enable GMLR construction after rainy season. Officials stated ineligible residents had opportunities to challenge survey findings before final list publication. Authorities are working on rehabilitation plans for affected commercial units, with proposed relocation within Mulund or to Bhandup.

Justices Girish Kulkarni and Aarti Sathe visited the Kanjurmarg dumping ground and waste treatment facility on Saturday, a day after the Bombay High Court warned the BMC to curb methane emissions and their effects or face a halt to all activities and the need to find an alternative site. The judges are hearing a petition by Kannamwar Nagar residents over rising pollution. During the two-hour visit, officials presented waste-management processes, including recycling and generating power from methane gas.
