BMC Begins Nahur Bird Park Construction as Mulund Hospital Opens

BMC will begin building a 17,140-square-metre exotic bird park at Nahur on December 14 and inaugurate Mulund’s new 470-bed Agarwal General Hospital.

Revenue sources will include shoots, advertising, sponsorships, adoption programmes and leased cafés and restaurants.
  • The new Agarwal General Hospital building, inaugurated December 14, replaces buildings demolished in 2017. Construction began in 2019; the ground-plus-10-floor building covers approximately 59,045 sq m. It has 470 beds: 310 general and 160 super-specialty. Services include medicine, surgery, paediatrics, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry, dialysis, ICU and CT/MRI; cardiology, plastic surgery, nephrology and urology services will be introduced gradually. The hospital originally opened on October 2, 1958.

The BMC extended bids for Nahur West’s proposed exotic bird park to October 31 after low participation, amid allegations of tender irregularities.

The tender was issued August 29, with a September 19 deadline; nine bidders attended a September 10 pre-bid meeting. Deadlines were extended three times, first to October 3, then October 17 and October 31. The BMC expects the extension to attract more firms.

BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha accused the process of favouring tainted firms and alleged a nexus between BMC officials and private players. In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, he called the tender “compromised” and urged moving it to another department. The BMC denies wrongdoing over cost escalations. Two submissions were sent to the Central Zoo Authority for bird acquisition and layout approval.

Of a 17,139.64-square-metre plot, 10,859 square metres are proposed for the park. The contractor will build and maintain it for two years. Planned facilities include bird habitats, seating, an amphitheatre, knowledge centre, walkways, restaurant, artificial waterfall, hospital, quarantine facility and underground parking for 60 cars. Species include sun and golden conures, eclectus and African grey parrots, ostriches, toco toucans and black swans.
