BMC received bids from nine firms for development of exotic bird park at Nahur, estimated cost Rs 166 crore. Project aims to create recreational hub for citizens.

Project initiated last year with two submissions to Central Zoo Authority for bird acquisition and layout approval. Faced controversy over cost escalations, which BMC denied. Tenders invited last month with pre-bid meeting conducted addressing queries on bank guarantee requirements and operational MOUs. Contract expected to be finalized by November.

Selected contractor responsible for construction and two-year maintenance. Park will feature sun conures, golden conures, eclectus parrots, African grey parrots, ostriches, toco toucans, black swans, pelicans, ducks, cranes.

Enclosures made of stainless steel tensile wire mesh. Dedicated holding areas with artificial water bodies and habitat replicas for large birds. Facilities include seating area, amphitheatre, knowledge centre, walkways, restaurant. Artificial waterfall, hospital, quarantine facility for bird care. Underground parking for 60 cars.

BMC is developing Mumbai's first bird park in the Nahur region. Project cost: ₹100 crore. Target completion: 2027. Features geographical zones representing Africa, Australia, and USA. Will house 22 exotic bird species.

Mumbai's first-ever aviary will be located in Nahur. The facility will feature 22 bird species across multiple themed sections: Africa Zone, Australia Zone, and USA Zone, each housing bird species native to those regions.

The BMC plans to procure a US-made tarpomatic covering system for the Kanjur Marg landfill; implementation is expected in 60–90 days. Following Bombay High Court directives, civic officials will also study Lucknow’s solid-waste processing project. A special committee recently visited the dumping ground and selected waste-covering technology as an emergency measure.

Mumbai generates about 7,000 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. Nearly 90% is processed at Kanjurmarg, with the rest sent to Deonar. Residents of Vikhroli, Bhandup and Nahur have complained of persistent odours.

The system uses a machine mounted on landfill compactors or dozers to lay reusable tarps over active waste, replacing daily soil cover. It is intended to save airspace, reduce costs, control odours and fire risk, and limit worker exposure.

The State Urban Development Department formed a monitoring committee chaired by retired IAS officer Umakant Dangat, with IIT Bombay experts and others. It will assess waste management, temporary odour and gas controls, grievance redressal, environmental and court-order compliance, scientific upgrades and possible contractor action, and submit recommendations to the High-Level Committee and periodic reports.

• The BMC-owned site covers 17,140 sq m, including 10,860 sq m for specialised aviaries. Other facilities will include ticketing, restrooms, a souvenir shop, café and underground parking. The park will have 24 habitat-specific enclosures, themed around Australia, Africa and America, plus a pheasant section. Birds will include Galah cockatoos, Eclectus parrots, Sun and Golden Conures, Senegal and Jardine parrots, peafowl, Toco toucans, Scarlet macaws, and Golden and Silver pheasants. A bird hospital, quarantine area, bird kitchen and veterinary facilities are planned. Revenue sources will include shoots, advertising, sponsorships, adoption programmes and leased cafés and restaurants.
• The new Agarwal General Hospital building, inaugurated December 14, replaces buildings demolished in 2017. Construction began in 2019; the ground-plus-10-floor building covers approximately 59,045 sq m. It has 470 beds: 310 general and 160 super-specialty. Services include medicine, surgery, paediatrics, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry, dialysis, ICU and CT/MRI; cardiology, plastic surgery, nephrology and urology services will be introduced gradually. The hospital originally opened on October 2, 1958.
