The BMC has finalised removing 97 trees from a plot behind Hanging Gardens for an alternative tank to maintain water supply during repairs to the 135-year-old Malabar Hill reservoir. Of 389 trees initially earmarked, 189 were proposed for removal before public resistance reduced the figure to 97. Twenty large trees, mostly mango, chikoo, jackfruit, Ashoka and palm, will be cut; rare Ram trees will be preserved. Seventy-four trees will be removed at the tank site and 23 at the valve operations site. The BMC is exploring ways to save more old trees and reduce the project’s carbon footprint.

The BMC has told IIT Roorkee it will proceed with a single 52-MLD tank, dropping a three-tier, 35–44-MLD design estimated to cost ₹100–125 crore. IIT Roorkee recommended the 52-MLD alternative after inspecting the reservoir in June 2024. An earlier ₹698-crore full-reconstruction plan was scrapped after public resistance and intervention by local representatives. Malabar Hill’s water requirement is 240 MLD; the existing reservoir holds 147 MLD and supplies A and D wards, including Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Colaba, Girgaon, Nepeansea Road and Malabar Hill.
