Bhuleshwar Traders Propose Cluster Redevelopment to Revive Jewellery Market

Traders are seeking cluster redevelopment in Bhuleshwar to modernise its imitation jewellery market and compete with Chinese imports.

  • Thirty-five landlords and 72 buildings are proposing cluster redevelopment in Bhuleshwar, creating a modern residential-commercial hub for imitation jewellery and related trades. The market comprises 77 buildings; traders say at least 200 buildings must participate for the plan to succeed. The association has asked local MLA Amin Patel for support; he said he would back a plan in his constituency but said the numbers do not yet add up.
  • The Imitation Jewellery Dealers and Manufacturers Association represents 2,200 members. More than 10 lakh workers are involved in handmade production across Mumbai, but about 5,400 manufacturing units have shut since 2022. Chinese imitation jewellery imports in metro cities are estimated at over ₹25,000 crore annually.
  • Association president Atul Dhanesha’s turnover fell from ₹18–20 crore in 2021 to ₹6 crore, and his workforce from 290 to 60. Bhiwandi has 40 operating factories out of 400; trade standards, policies and margins have fallen nearly 65%. In Malad and Kandivali, plating factories have closed, leaving 80% of 1,000 labourers unemployed.
Residents demand Coastal Road exit at Nepean Sea Road to ease traffic

Breach Candy residents launched a campaign for a dedicated Coastal Road exit at Nepean Sea Road to reduce congestion on the narrow corridor affected by Amarsons interchange traffic.

Residents of Breach Candy and nearby neighbourhoods demand a dedicated exit from Mumbai Coastal Road to Nepean Sea Road (NSR). UnlockTheExit campaign launched March 11 advocates for the exit to distribute traffic more evenly across Breach Candy, NSR, Malabar Hill and Kemps Corner.

Current situation: Traffic exiting through Amarsons interchange enters a dense urban corridor with narrow carriageways (many less than 10 metres wide) and heavy local activity including ambulance services and VIP movement. Vehicles take 30 minutes to cover 300 metres during peak hours. The interchange serves Breach Candy, Malabar Hill, Kemps Corner, Kalbadevi, Girgaon and Bhuleshwar.

2016 Coastal Road Detailed Project Report estimated only 2.2% of NSR traffic would divert to Coastal Road, based on 2008 traffic data. Residents' September 2025 study showed nearly 50% of vehicles exiting Amarsons interchange headed towards NSR or Malabar Hill. Earlier planning studies had recommended an NSR exit but it was not included in the 2016 report.

Proposal: Use reclaimed land parcel near Embassy Apartments on NSR (currently under MSRDC) to create one-kilometre exit from Coastal Road's north-south carriageway. BMC requested PWD to transfer the MSRDC land strip, but no progress reported. Chief minister directed authorities to examine the plan.
