Mumbai Plans ₹805-Crore Byculla Cable-Stayed Flyover

BMC has announced an ₹805-crore flyover linking Byculla’s Y-Bridge to JJ Flyover, with arms connecting Mazgaon to the Eastern Freeway.

Key facts

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s ₹805-crore cable-stayed flyover will connect Byculla’s Y-Bridge with JJ Flyover and ease traffic between Lalbaug and Mazgaon. Two approach arms will link Olivant Bridge in Mazgaon directly to the Eastern Freeway.

The 1,182-metre project includes a 230-metre cable-stayed section, a 312-metre viaduct towards JJ Flyover, and west and east stretches of 290 metres and 350 metres near the Y-Bridge. Ramps and lanes are intended to ease bottlenecks at Richardson and Cruddas Road.

The design includes stainless steel girders, rigid pavements, reinforced ramps, drainage lines, noise barriers and road furniture. BMC will coordinate construction traffic diversions with Mumbai Traffic Police. Construction is estimated to take 18 months; the final schedule is unconfirmed.

Mumbai’s First Cable-Stayed Road Bridge Opens at Reay Road

Mumbai inaugurated its first cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road, replacing a narrow 1910 structure and improving connections between Byculla and Mazgaon.

Key facts

Mumbai’s first cable-stayed road overbridge, measuring 385 metres, was inaugurated on May 13, 2025, at 7 PM by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The six-lane bridge connects Mahul Road near the Eastern Freeway to Barrister Nath Pai Marg, replacing a two-lane bridge built in 1910 and crossing the Harbour Line at Reay Road station, a heritage site and former line terminus.

The project shifted 130 hutments, 15 shop sheds and a railway ticket counter. An underpass was also built along Barrister Nath Pai Road. Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (Maharail) constructed the bridge with longer spans to avoid underground utilities; architectural LED lighting was installed. Maharail’s next expected project is the Byculla road overbridge, part of a plan to modernise ageing British-era structures.
