Two days of continuous monsoon rain flooded low-lying parts of Bhiwandi, damaging homes, shops and powerloom units and disrupting daily life. Teen Batti, the city’s main wholesale and retail market, was submerged under waist-deep water, paralysing business for several hours. Hundreds of shops, homes and factories reportedly suffered losses.

The Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation awarded contracts worth approximately ₹2.5 crore to clean drains across all five civic wards before the monsoon. Residents allege barely half the scheduled work was completed. Choked drains overflowed, flooding Shanti Nagar, Gaibi Nagar, Ansar Nagar, Dargah Road, Bandar Mohalla, Three Batti, Uchit Pada and Aam Pada. Two-wheelers and four-wheelers were stranded, and water damaged household belongings, machinery and merchandise.

Residents also criticised the emergency response, alleging municipal teams did not arrive to drain water or provide relief. Former corporator Haleem Ansari called for accountability for officials and contractors. Residents are demanding an independent inquiry, action over alleged lapses and urgent improvements to flood management ahead of heavier rain.
