Mumbai Traffic Police restricted heavy vehicles on the Sant Dnyaneshwar Chowk–Western Express Highway stretch, popularly known as Akurli Road in Kandivali, from February 23, 2026. The order, issued by additional commissioner of police (traffic) Priyanka Narnaware, bars them from 8am to 9pm, except vehicles providing essential and necessary services.

Residents had complained for months about congestion and delayed emergency response. They blamed heavy vehicles linked to a Mahindra tractor manufacturing unit, alongside a road divider, construction and an earlier right-turn closure. An ambulance was reportedly stuck for 15 to 20 minutes during a medical emergency earlier in February.

The Samta Nagar traffic division said the factory has a designated entrance and exit from the Western Express Highway and has been urged to use them. A similar restriction imposed last year was not renewed after compliance improved; heavy-vehicle traffic later increased. We All Connect has pursued the issue for over two years. Lokhandwala residents welcomed the order but called for consistent enforcement, particularly during peak hours.
