Thane Municipal Corporation has proposed a CBSE school from pre-primary to Class 10 in Kavesar, in the Ghodbunder area. The proposal awaits approval by the civic body’s general assembly. The site, under the Majiwada-Manpada ward committee, comprises 3,580 square metres of land reserved for education and a completed ground-plus-seven-storey building with 4,113.85 square metres of built-up area, handed over to the education department.

Planned facilities include a library, science, computer and mathematics laboratories, rooms and halls for dance, music, art and sports, a playground, drinking water, and separate boys’ and girls’ toilets on every floor. Students would receive free books, uniforms, educational materials and meals; the corporation would provide furniture and equipment. A selected private institution would appoint and pay qualified teaching and non-teaching staff and administer the school. The corporation would obtain state permissions and no-objection certificates.

The proposal follows the launch of a municipal CBSE school in Kharegaon for 2026-27. The corporation runs 102 primary schools in five mediums; 11 English-medium schools are self-financed and follow the Maharashtra State Board. The mayor and corporators have called for expanding the CBSE model.

Locals are campaigning against cosmetic beautification plans for Kavesar Lake, described as Thane’s last natural wetland. The lake is within a 350-acre built-up township.

Residents and environmentalists from Hiranandani Estate protested the proposed beautification of 150-year-old Kavesar Lake, near Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbunder Road, Thane. Hundreds gathered on World Environment Day; another protest followed the next Saturday. The wetland spans about 5.6 acres and supports rare white lotuses, birds, butterflies and other flora and fauna.

Thane Municipal Corporation laid the project’s foundation stone in May 2025. Plans include an open gym, temple and walking pathway. A “Save Kavesar Lake” campaign and online petition opposing the project have attracted more than 4,000 signatures. Protesters want the project cancelled and instead propose dustbins, lighting and cleaning, planned with local residents. They have requested that the area be declared a silence zone and submitted a letter to TMC; a delegation plans to approach the Chief Minister. Former corporator Manohar Dumbre said residents may hunger-strike if their concerns are ignored. TMC declined to comment; Commissioner Saurabh Rao did not respond.

Residents supporting the Kavesar Lake beautification project in Hiranandani Estate, Thane, allege that political leaders and the tanker mafia are misleading opponents and that opposition is politically motivated.
