Thane Traffic Police implemented a reverse lane (counter-flow) system on Eastern Express Highway to address congestion from bridge construction that reduced the Mumbai-bound carriageway from four lanes to two.
Bridge reconstruction restricted capacity, creating severe bottlenecks on the Mumbai-bound side, particularly between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM during peak commute hours.
The reverse lane borrows one lane from the lower-volume Thane-bound side during morning peak hours, restoring three-lane flow for Mumbai-bound traffic. Long queues previously extending toward Ghodbunder and Kalyan have significantly diminished.
Under Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbare and DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat, officers are stationed on-site to manage temporary barriers and guide motorists through transition points. The system relies on heavy manual intervention for safety and minimal disruption.
Motorists reported smoother journeys and approval from daily travelers. The measures will remain in place while bridge work continues to restrict highway capacity.
