Balaji Nagar, one of Puzhuthivakkam’s largest localities, has nearly 45 streets. Its 37th Street is the main route to the Inner Ring Road Extension, which links Velachery Main Road and GST Road. Potholes and craters along the street make travel difficult, particularly for two-wheeler riders and parents taking children to school. Residents attribute the damage to a leaking water pipeline at the 37th and 36th streets junction, where overflowing water has damaged the road. They said complaints to Chennai Corporation officials had not led to repairs. A senior Corporation official said a tender had been called and the street would be repaved after the northeast monsoon withdraws.

Avadi Municipal Corporation developing 12 new parks across Avadi with projects including sponge parks and parks around water bodies aimed at improving rainwater recharge and mitigating monsoon inundation. Total cost: ₹9.69 crore. Each project designed based on specific locality needs.

Key projects:

• Arafath Lake restoration with park at Thirumullaivoyal: ₹2.99 crore, includes children's play area, food court, open-air theatre; work includes deepening lake for increased storage and bund protection.
• Parks around five water bodies serve as flood-control assets and groundwater recharge structures.
• Nethaji Nagar Park developed with sports complex.
• Sponge parks at Kanakkankuttai, Thirumullaivoyal, Sri Ram Nagar to reduce waterlogging.
• Park development in Jak Nagar and TNHB area.
• Sports courts in areas lacking playgrounds; fitness equipment and rainwater storage facilities in flood-prone areas.

Most of 48 existing parks have been repaired and improved with better amenities. Some projects to be completed in two months, others within six months. Corporation Commissioner R. Saranya stated parks would serve as community spaces for different age groups and prevent water body misuse and encroachments.

• Thirumullaivoyal, on Chennai’s western periphery under Avadi Municipal Corporation, lacks comprehensive underground drainage and water supply in some residential areas.
• Arafath Eri, beside C.T.H. Road, has shrunk from nearly 61 hectares to 13.02 hectares because of urbanisation and encroachments; it feeds Ambattur lake downstream.
• Sewage from Manigandapuram and Balaji Nagar flows into open rainwater canals linked to the lake; the lake is also covered with water hyacinth.
• Residents want encroachments cleared, the lake rejuvenated and recreational facilities developed.
• Residents also said the boundary near the Arikambedu-Thirumullaivoyal junction is used as a makeshift dumpyard.
• Srinagar Colony and Senthil Nagar are still waiting for water connections despite paying deposits 10 years ago; other connected areas also get inadequate supply.
• Saraswathi Nagar and M.G.R. Nagar have waited years for an underground sewer network.
• Sakthi Nagar, Venkatachalam Nagar and Saraswathi Nagar still lack blacktopped roads.
• Chozhambedu Main Road, connecting C.T.H. Road to residential areas including Tamarai Nagar, has potholes and uneven patches.
• Avadi Municipal Corporation said a proposal is being prepared to convert Arafath lake into an eco-park with pavements, a children’s play area and boat rides, on the lines of Paruthipattu lake in Avadi.
• The two sewage treatment plants at Manikandapuram 9th Street and C.T.H. Road are being made functional to reduce sewage pollution into Arafath lake.
• Underground drainage work is in progress.
• Nearly 80% of Thirumullaivoyal has drinking water lines; remaining connections are being provided, and a new overhead tank in Nagammai Nagar will supply left-out streets.
• Chozhambedu Main Road is expected to be restored in 10 days.
• Damaged roads, including in Manikandapuram, are being relaid at a cost of ₹2 crore.

A day after the first northeast monsoon rains flooded southern Chennai on Tuesday, water had receded in most affected areas by Wednesday. Waterlogging continued in Kamaraj Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur; Rajaji Nagar, Madipakkam; and Sai Balaji Nagar, Pallikaranai.

Tuesday flooding affected parts of Rajiv Gandhi Salai, including Perungudi, Karapakkam, Thoraipakkam, Perumbakkam and Sholinganallur; Ram Nagar and Kuberan Nagar in Madipakkam; Indira Nagar, Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. Residents said the limited rainfall and time for water to clear helped prevent worse flooding. Okkiyum Maduvu and the marshland near ELCOT were packed with water hyacinth, residents said, calling for cleaning to reduce flooding in Perumbakkam, Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam. Residents of Tambaram and Chromepet said some stormwater drains remained uncleared.

Perumbakkam Main Road had craters and potholes, while roads and service roads in Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur were in poor condition. MGR Main Road, linking Velachery and Taramani to the IT Expressway and serving IT and ITES companies, had roadworks dug along both sides of its median. Roads in Ram Nagar and Kuberan Nagar were also cratered.
