At a review meeting on May 14, 2026, Villivakkam MLA and Minister Aadhav Arjuna said civic agencies and government departments would identify land within 10 days for a medical college, engineering college, arts college and higher secondary school. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had directed MLAs to hold review meetings with officials to address local civic issues.

Arjuna said six of Villivakkam’s 11 TASMAC outlets were intended to close, particularly those near schools and places of worship; officials would identify traders selling liquor illegally after closures. He cited electricity supply problems and said more than 50% of stretches lacked water-supply pipelines. Storm-water drains would be readied before the monsoon. Officials were also asked to improve CCTV surveillance on streets and at government offices, and video-record women’s complaints at police stations.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna said on March 10 that the party would mobilise 5,000 people to protest if homes in Villivakkam, Chennai, are demolished over alleged waterbody encroachments and residents are not rehoused. He said people had lived in the area for nearly 30 years and questioned how the properties had been registered. Arjuna accused the DMK-led government of obtaining residents’ biometric data without their knowledge to secure a court demolition order, and called for time for residents to file a counter-petition in the Supreme Court. He also alleged the demolitions were carried out with police and DMK workers’ support.

TVK announced a separate protest on March 12, 2026, at 10 am in district capitals across Tamil Nadu, calling for a caste-survey order, action on law and order and drug issues, and withdrawal of guidelines it says restrict party meetings.

Chennai Metrowater plans to commission a ₹17.90-crore tertiary treatment plant with ultrafiltration at Villivakkam by September. The 5-million-litres-a-day plant is part of the Villivakkam lake restoration plan under Singara Chennai 2.0, following a National Green Tribunal directive; nearly 75% of construction is complete on a three-acre site near the lake.

The plant will collect sewage from SIDCO Nagar pumping station. Some treated water will be used for gardening; the rest will be disinfected through ozonation and discharged into Villivakkam lake. A nearby filling point will supply recycled water by lorry for non-potable uses including construction, laundry and vehicle washing.

Residents welcomed the restoration effort but said lake recreation facilities remain unfinished and called for improved sewer infrastructure in SIDCO Nagar and Kulakkarai Street to prevent overflows. The project uses membrane bioreactor technology; its implementing company, Hubert Enviro Care Systems, cited better-quality water for reuse, less sludge, a compact footprint and automation. Metrowater plans to raise Villivakkam’s treatment capacity to 10 mld in a later phase.

Nearly 48% of tunnelling for Chennai Metro Rail’s 118.9-km Phase II project is complete: 33.22 km of its 69.05 km underground network across three corridors. In the past three days, tunnel boring machines completed work on three stretches.

• Corridor 3, Madhavaram–SIPCOT, has 43.04 km of underground stretches, with 22.63 km tunnelled.
• About 62% of corridor 4, Poonamallee–Light House, is complete; corridor 5, Madhavaram–Sholinganallur, is 27% complete.
• Chetpet–Kilpauk Medical College: 685 metres, including beneath five railway tracks, Chetpet Eco Park and KMC Hospital; the machine drilled 6.1 metres below the Phase I tunnel.
• Villivakkam Railway Station–Villivakkam Bus Terminus: 601 metres, beneath five railway tracks.
• Royapettah–Radhakrishnan Salai: 915 metres, beneath structures on Royapettah High Road, including Peters Bridge, the EPFO building and a school.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s (CMRL) Tunnel Boring Machine Marutham broke through at the north shaft of Villivakkam Bus Terminus station after a 601-metre drive beneath five live railway tracks. The drive began at Villivakkam railway station on April 24. CMRL said the work caused no disruption to the public or road traffic and required ground protection in the dense residential neighbourhood. It is the first Corridor 5 package breakthrough beneath all five tracks and brings completed tunnel length on the corridor to 2.67 km. Corridor 5 is 47 km long; its underground section includes five stations, two ramps and 7.88 km of single-tunnel length. Attendees included CMRL director of projects T Archunan, chief general managers T Livingstone Eliazer, S Ashok Kumar and K Gurusamy, Tata Projects project director K Ramesh, and general consultants’ team leader Tony Burchell.
