A ₹34 crore 33/11 kV substation will be built in Hasthinapuram, Chromepet, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2026. Work will begin soon after legal hurdles were cleared. The project was delayed despite funds being sanctioned.

Residents of Chromepet and nearby areas have faced frequent power cuts and low voltage for over 10 years. A 64-cent government plot in Hasthinapuram, previously encroached, was identified and allotted to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in 2019.

The substation is expected to improve supply in Venkataraman Nagar, Vinobaji Nagar, Thirumalai Nagar, Jain Nagar, Krishna Nagar and Anna Nagar. Around 30,000 consumers in Rajakilpakkam, Kovilambakkam, Radhanagar and Pallavaram are expected to benefit.

The long-delayed Radha Nagar subway near Chromepet railway station will open to the public on January 7, 2026, with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin set to inaugurate it. Conceived in 2011 to ease congestion caused by the level crossing, the project cost about ₹14.75 crore, shared equally by the state highways department and Southern Railway. The highways department completed its work, while Southern Railway took several months to finish the staircase and platform access facilities. The subway runs beneath the railway tracks, parallel to Rajendra Prasad Road in Hasthinapuram and Grand Southern Trunk Road. It had previously been scheduled to open in September.

The decade-old Radha Nagar subway near Chromepet railway station remains shut, two months after its scheduled September 2025 opening, because of delays by Southern Railways. Taken up jointly by the state highways department and the Railways in 2014, the project was built across railway tracks to ease long-standing congestion on GST Road. Land acquisition and departmental permissions also took time. Running parallel to Rajendra Prasad Road in Hasthinapuram, the subway is expected to connect several residential pockets in Chromepet. A 3-m-wide pedestrian pathway is being laid alongside it, providing direct access to the railway station and ticket counters from both sides. The crossing has been a major traffic choke point for decades, with vehicles piling up on Radha Nagar Main Road and GST Road.

• He said bikers have skidded on the stretch and that Zone 3 no longer has a chairman, leaving neighbourhoods to fend for themselves.
• Residents said several roads relaid before the pandemic were of subpar quality and deteriorated quickly.
• Prabhakar, a resident of Chitlapakkam who commutes via Old Hasthinapuram Main Road, said roads need to withstand rain and that even smaller roads have poorly placed speed breakers.
• Residents said the roads are especially difficult for senior citizens and children attending nearby schools.
• Social activist Santhanam V. said the civic body should focus on road quality before the monsoon, and that roads should last longer than six months.
• Tambaram Corporation commissioner S. Balachander said the government has sanctioned Rs 140 crore for municipal roads.
• He said all roads have already been tendered, work orders were given this week, and all damaged roads will be repaired and restored within two months.
