Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri, agreed to de-reserve 0.33 hectares of its biodiversity heritage site for the JICA-funded sewage treatment plant (STP) at Aundh. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked the Maharashtra Biodiversity Heritage Board in Nagpur to make the final decision on granting the land. The proposed plant occupies part of Aundh’s 33-acre Botanical Garden, designated a biodiversity heritage site by a gazette notification on August 31, 2020. Construction approval has been received; land use remains pending.

JICA is funding 11 STPs under a central government scheme, with 10 already under construction. Across Pune, the project aims to reduce pollution in the Mula-Mutha river, add 396 million litres per day (MLD) to existing capacity of 477 MLD, lay 55 km of sewer lines and renovate or rehabilitate four intermediate pumping stations. Completion was planned for 2025, bringing total capacity to 988.50 MLD, sufficient for sewage generation in 2027.

NHAI has initiated auxiliary service roads within Pimpri-Chinchwad limits: a new 12-metre-wide road alongside the existing 12-metre road, providing 24 metres across stretches covering Punawale, Bhumkar Chowk, Hinjewadi and Balewadi. Three box-structure underpasses have been approved at high-traffic intersections including Punawale, Kiwale, Ravet and Wakad. Widening underpasses at Tathawade and Punawale and expediting pending service-road works across three localities have also been approved. Upgrades to the Aundh-Ravet BRTS Road and a connection between Tathawade Road and Dange Chowk are under consideration.

Tathawade is roughly 8 km from Hinjewadi IT Park; IT hubs in Wakad, Hinjewadi and Baner are within 12 km of Punawale. Proposed Nigdi Station on the Purple Metro Line is about 5 km from Punawale. Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line-3 is in advanced stages.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee approved an estimated ₹2,634 crore to acquire nearly 4.98 lakh square metres across 15 locations for the high-capacity mass transit route (HCMTR): Bopodi, Aundh, Bhamburda, Erandwane, Kothrud, Hingne, Parvati, Munjeri, Wanawadi, Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Vadgaonsheri, Lohegaon, Yerawada and Dhanori.

The decision followed a review chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to expedite the HCMTR and inner ring road. At an August 28 meeting, the PMC was directed to submit acquisition proposals by August 31; it has forwarded them to the district collector’s office.

Acquisition will follow the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and Section 126 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. Although the 2013 law generally requires a 30% compensation deposit before a Section 19 notification, the collector directed the PMC to deposit the full amount at the final award stage.

The PMC will bear acquisition costs within its jurisdiction. Three financial experts will help structure funding, loans, fundraising and repayment, and assess viability gap funding and land monetisation.
