• The BMC’s K West ward and Mumbai Suburban Collector’s office demolished 41 residential structures and one religious structure on collector land at SVP Nagar near Lokhandwala. The area has been barricaded, and the BMC bridge department is to begin construction.
• The bridge will connect SVP Nagar to Yari Road, cutting travel time between the areas from around 35 minutes to five. It is expected to benefit Versova, Yari Road and Koli Village, and provide access to the Versova–Bandra Sea Link when operational.
• The 393.2-metre bridge will cross Kavathe Creek, with a 110-metre single-span steel arch. Approach roads will measure 166 metres on the Yari Road side and 117 metres on the Lokhandwala side.
• First proposed in 2002, the project received a ₹17-crore tender in 2014 and a contractor was appointed. The BMC issued a ₹42-crore tender in November 2023. A legal challenge over potential mangrove damage delayed work; the Supreme Court dismissed the petition in 2023. The route requires removal of 48 mangrove trees.

On Thursday, October 30, 2025, the BMC and collector’s office demolished around 40 unauthorised slum structures encroaching on Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) land in Lokhandwala, Mumbai. The structures had stalled a long-pending vehicular bridge.

Forty-two families in Siddharth Nagar, Andheri West, have been ordered to vacate within 15 days for the bridge connecting Yari Road and Lokhandwala. The September 26 notice from the Mumbai suburban district collector’s office calls their homes unauthorised structures; non-compliance may lead to forcible demolition, with costs recovered as land revenue. The BMC invoked Section 50(3) of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, under a 2008 state circular, rather than the Slum Rehabilitation Act, 1995. A July 24 inspection found 41 huts and a temple had re-emerged on land cleared in 2011. Residents say they have lived there since 1993 and received no rehabilitation; they say 800 huts are in Siddharth Nagar, but 42 are affected.

The 393-metre bridge over Kavathe Creek will link Yari Road and Versova with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Lokhandwala Complex and Samarth Nagar. It includes a 110-metre single-span steel arch, a 166-metre Yari Road approach and a 117-metre Lokhandwala approach. Intended to ease congestion and improve east-west connectivity, it is expected to cut Versova–Lokhandwala travel time from 30 to 10 minutes and provide an alternative route with the upcoming Versova–Bandra Sea Link. The BMC has Union environment ministry approval to cross 0.21 hectares of mangrove forest.

BMC expects the 206-metre flyover linking Yari Road and Lokhandwala Back Road in Andheri West to be ready by December 2027. Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the site near Amarnath Tower on Monday and directed officials to meet the deadline.

The bridge will support an 18.3-metre-wide Development Plan road on either side of Kavthe Creek. It comprises a 110-metre main bridge and approach roads measuring 40 metres on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar side and 56 metres near Ama. The link will connect Yari Road, Panch Marg and Versova with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Lokhandwala Complex and Samarth Nagar. Travel time is expected to fall from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, easing traffic.

BMC is constructing a four-lane underpass at the JVLR junction in Jogeshwari, modelled on the existing underpass at Metro Cinema in Marine Lines. The project has received administrative approval and a consultant has been appointed. It aims to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety during peak hours.
