Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai sold an unused property in Mumbai for ₹12.85 crore. He used the proceeds to purchase commercial property in Goregaon to expand Mukta Arts’ office space and support its future projects.

MHADA’s 2026 affordable-housing lottery offers 2,640 Mumbai flats through computerised online allotment. More than 82,000 applications were received in two months; the deadline is May 28. Flats are divided among EWS (145), LIG (858), MIG (1,408) and HIG (229) categories. Homes may be built, acquired through redevelopment, or sourced from penalties or vacant stock.

Applicants must be Indian citizens aged at least 18, have valid identity proof and at least 15 years’ Maharashtra residency, meet an income category and provide income proof. Annual family income limits are approximately ₹6 lakh for EWS, ₹9 lakh for LIG and ₹12 lakh for MIG; HIG is above the MIG limit. Applicants, spouses and minor children must not own residential property within the municipal limits where the scheme is offered.

Apply online via MHADA’s website: register with personal details, verify the Aadhaar-linked mobile number by OTP, log in, select the scheme and enter income category, applicant type and scheme code. Pay by demand draft, card, net banking or UPI. Check results online and, if selected, accept or reject the unit within the specified period.

Locations include Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli; Patra Chawl, Siddharth Nagar, Goregaon; Old Magathane and Gorai, Borivli; Subhash Nagar, Chembur; Gandhi Nagar, Bandra; Pant Nagar, Ghatkopar; Girgaum; Wadala; Lokmanya Nagar, Dadar; Antop Hill, Wadala; Kopri and Tunga, Powai; Mazgaon; and Pahadi Goregaon.

Govandi-Mankhurd comprises much of M/East ward. The Deonar dumping ground was established here in 1927. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is redeveloping 64 slum pockets across Mumbai, with 18 colonies marked for redevelopment in Govandi. A colossal 400,000 sq m is up for redevelopment, generating Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) that builders can use in projects elsewhere in the city. Slum residents' consent is not required, nor do they have a say in the plan.

Govandi's history: In the 1950s, slum and pavement dwellers from the island city were evicted to Manbadruk in Trombay near Govandi and Majaz Colony in Jogeshwari. Around 7,450 families set up Janta Colony in Trombay, the earliest slum settlement in Govandi. In the same decade, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Trombay prompted further displacement. In the late 1960s and 1970s, demolitions saw settlers arrive in Lotus Colony, Shivaji Nagar and Bainganwadi, displaced from the island city and suburbs such as Bandra, Juhu and Andheri. Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar was set up in the 1970s by the Matang community from Marathwada. The shifting of Bandra's slaughter house to Deonar in 1971 brought another group of settlers. During Indira Gandhi's Emergency in 1976, around 7,000 homes in Janta Colony were demolished to make way for Anushakti Nagar, which built 700 flats for Department of Atomic Energy officers.

MHADA reclaimed an 8-acre (32,913 sq. metres) parcel in Juhu-Andheri, Mumbai, after removing unauthorized structures following a Bombay High Court order. The land was allocated for rehabilitation of slum dwellers from Loknayak Nagar, Shivajinagar and New Kapaswadi Cooperative Housing Societies. MHADA issued a 2003 No Objection Certificate for 59,086.30 sq. metres under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, but 32,913 sq. metres were later excluded because of unauthorized encroachments and missing approvals.

Bombay Slum Development Corporation Pvt. Ltd. filed a public-interest litigation in 2022. While the case was sub judice, it erected iron sheds on the land, prompting complaints and MHADA removal notices. On February 25, 2025, the High Court refused to stay the removal, after which MHADA conducted the eviction drive. It was led by MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal, guided by Mumbai Board Chief Officer Milind Borikar, and overseen by Sandeep Kalambhe and Executive Engineer Anil Rathod.
