Deonar is a green and very peaceful locality. It has very fine bungalows including Raj Kapoors Bungalow. Tata Institute of Social Sciences, BARC, Telecom Colony, etc form a very posh neighborhood. It is very close to the first exit of the Eastern Freeway, SCLR, Monorail and in close proximity to the Metro terminus. Deonar is blessed with connectivity minus the chaos.

The project will cost Rs 2,540 crore, compared with BMC’s original estimate of Rs 2,368 crore. Processing will cost Rs 1,373.35 per tonne, up from the estimated Rs 1,280. Deonar Dumping Ground has operated since 1927.

The reservation proposal has not yet reached the urban development department’s additional chief secretary.

A 2.05-hectare plot at Mandale village in Turbhe was sanctioned for a vertical jail, but MMRDA took a large part for a metro car shed. The prisons department says the remaining land is insufficient and difficult to build on because it is marshland with Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) issues; it had sought five hectares.

Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai’s central prison, holds more than 2,500 inmates despite capacity for 804. Some prisoners are sent to Taloja and Thane jails. Barracks at Thane Central Jail are being repaired and additional cells built. Manori was rejected because ferry access would make court transport difficult; officials are scouting another plot at Pahadi, Goregaon.
