Tambaram Corporation’s modern gas crematorium in Ward 30, Lakshmipuram, Chromepet, was built for ₹2.5 crore to serve Lakshmipuram, Nagappa Nagar, Umaiyalpuram, Chandran Nagar and surrounding areas. It was completed more than eight months ago, and the contractor reportedly received full payment in January, but the facility has not opened. Residents continue using the gas crematorium opposite Chromepet Government Hospital, crossing GST Road for funeral processions that affect traffic. Corporation officials said the Lakshmipuram Residents Welfare Association Trust, which had initially agreed to manage the facility, delayed taking charge. The Corporation has identified another private trust and is finalising the process; officials expect the crematorium to become operational soon. A trial was conducted using coconut fronds and old firewood after officials said an unclaimed body was unavailable for the trial run.

Residents and activists say operations were delayed while authorities sought an unclaimed body for a trial run; the Corporation says the trial has been completed.
The ₹2.5-crore facility, in Ward 30 of Zone 1, was taken up in 2024-25 and handed over by the contractor in mid-February 2026. Built on the site of an open-air crematorium, it was designed to preserve an existing Harichandra temple and water tank. After local residents failed to form a trust meeting government norms, maintenance was assigned to M.H.T. Engineering. The Corporation says residents can use the facility after submitting required documents and may take over maintenance if they form a qualifying trust. It said a permanent name board would be installed within days. The facility is intended to serve Lakshmipuram and neighbouring Nagappa Nagar, New Colony and Umayalpuram.

Uneven, slushy roads cause hardship for parents taking children to school, slow vehicles and increase accident risks during school hours. Ward 32 councillor E Elumalai said CMWSSB had paid road-cut charges to the corporation and a tender had been called for relaying. He said work was halted because of the monsoon and urged officials to apply wet mix as a temporary measure.
