The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking objected before the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to a private utility’s proposal to distribute electricity in Dharavi, where BEST currently serves consumers. BEST cited concerns about its existing distribution infrastructure, consumer base and revenue. MERC will examine the proposal and BEST’s objections before deciding whether to allow another utility to operate in the area. The proposal could affect households, commercial establishments and Mumbai’s electricity market, as well as BEST’s distribution operations.

Adani Navbharat Developers Private Limited plans a 3.3-kilometre public waterfront along the Mithi River, from the Matunga culvert, as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. It will include promenades, cycling tracks, parks, viewing decks, cafes, cultural spaces and a 15-metre-wide pedestrian and cycling Green Spine linking the river promenade with Dharavi’s planned Central Park. Native pollution-absorbing vegetation, permeable pavements and bioswales are planned for stormwater management and groundwater recharge.

Nearly 40,000 trees are to be rejuvenated or planted across Dharavi in phases. The BMC has permitted removal of 1,693 trees for redevelopment; about half are to be transplanted, while nearly 8,000 may ultimately be felled. Around 2 lakh compensatory trees are planned across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region; 30,000 have been planted at Chahade village in Palghar, and 75,000 are targeted this monsoon. Terracon will oversee plantation, irrigation, maintenance and survival monitoring for five years. Rehabilitation housing construction has begun, with Sector 6 residents being shifted.

At a review meeting at Sahyadri Guest House on June 8, 2026, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Dharavi’s redevelopment should prioritise residents and livelihoods, not just construction, and be completed on schedule. Attendees included Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, Minister of State Dr Pankaj Bhoyar, Adani Group Managing Director Pranav Adani, Managing Director Anil Sardana and Ajit Barodia; Sardana presented project details.

Fadnavis called for preserving Kumbharwada’s pottery, cultural and tourism role; implementing a proposed nature park; and replanting and planting trees. He sought a single-window permits cell, employment generation, women’s empowerment, protections for small industries and modern infrastructure. A special MSME scheme is being prepared for leather, textile, recycling, pottery and food industries, with a modern cloud-kitchen concept proposed. Eligible residents’ new homes will have separate kitchens, bedrooms and toilets, natural light, and separate toilets for women.

Planned connectivity includes Western, Central and Harbour railway lines, metro lines, a Bullet Train connection, a fast jetty for airport water transport and a water port for future air taxis, alongside road links.

Residents of chawls and buildings included in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will receive free rehabilitation flats measuring 500–754 sq ft. The benefit covers around 8,700 households in the Dharavi Notified Area, including chawls and housing societies.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) in May 2025 to submit a proposal for a minimum 500 sq ft carpet area, with reasons, for government approval. DRP proposed 500 sq ft, comprising 370 sq ft of carpet area plus 35% fungible area.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the expansion in the 2026–27 state budget. The originally planned 17.5-kilometre underground corridor will gain 6.9 kilometres, bringing its estimated cost to ₹23,487 crore. It will run beyond Sewri through the Dharavi redevelopment area to Bandra Terminus, increasing the station count from 14 to 19. Five additions are Chunabhatti, Sion, central Dharavi, Bandra West and Bandra Terminus.

The previously proposed route included Anik Bus Depot, CGS Bus Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Sewri, Haji Bunder, Bandar Coal Depot, Reay Road, Byculla, Nagpada, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Horniman Circle and SPM Circle, ending near the Gateway of India.

An interchange at Dharavi will connect with Metro Line 3, serving routes to Bandra-Kurla Complex and SEEPZ; Bandra West will connect with Line 2B. The corridor is intended to link eastern and suburban Mumbai, including Thane, with South Mumbai, reduce travel times and ease road congestion.
