• The century-old Sion railway overbridge, a key east-west link between Mumbai’s island city and eastern suburbs, has been closed since August 2024, disrupting traffic and increasing travel times. Motorists have been diverted through Sion, Dharavi and nearby corridors.
• Reconstruction includes replacing ageing structural components, installing additional steel girders and building approach roads. Girders are being assembled in phases to limit disruption to railway operations.
• The cost has risen from ₹42.8 crore to nearly ₹50 crore, attributed by civic officials to additional girders and approach roads. The revised proposal went before the BMC standing committee earlier in 2026.
• In December 2025, BMC additional commissioner Abhijit Bangar directed officials to finish by May 31, 2026. In March 2026, BMC told the committee the bridge would open to traffic by August 15. The deadline was missed; the project is now targeting August 15.

The BMC and Central Railway are rebuilding the century-old Sion east–west railway overbridge, closed since August 2024. Completion has been pushed from May 31 to August 15, 2026. The cost has risen from ₹42.83 crore to ₹49.96 crore because of additional steel girders and approach roads; the escalation proposal is awaiting BMC Standing Committee approval. The work includes approach roads, two PUPs and related works. A foot overbridge opened in October 2025. Delays have caused traffic disruption and pedestrian inconvenience, including for schoolchildren; officials had previously expected west-side work to finish by May 31 and east-side work 30–45 days later, targeting July 15.

The committee also reviewed 49 proposals, including a 1.3 km flyover linking the Eastern Express Highway and Airoli. Its contract was awarded for ₹1,389 crore, 6.8% above estimate, but the final estimated cost is ₹2,495 crore. Completion is scheduled within 36 months, excluding monsoon delays. It is part of the ₹16,000-crore Goregaon–Mulund Link Road project.

The BMC has extended the completion deadline for the Sion east–west railway overbridge from May 31 to July 15, 2026. Closed since August 2024, the century-old bridge in front of Sion station has forced commuters onto long detours. A foot overbridge is open, and the completed LBS Road public underpass is expected to open within a fortnight. Construction of the second underpass on the Dharavi side is under way.

The northern portion of the old railway bridge has been dismantled; work on the southern portion continues. The Railway Administration is expected to install the final girder by May 31. The east-side approach road is expected to be handed to the BMC by then, with east-side work taking a further 30 to 45 days. West-side work, planned in four phases, is scheduled for completion by May 31. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar inspected the site with bridge department officials.

A new foot overbridge for local residents was completed and opened to the public over the weekend, clearing the way for demolition and reconstruction of the long-stalled Sion road bridge. Demolition is expected to be completed by January 2026, with reconstruction to begin afterward. The bridge is an east-west connector spanning Central Railway tracks. The project is being undertaken jointly by Central Railway and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
