Charni road is a station in the Western railways. The famous H2O and Cafe by the beach is located nearby. Saifee hospital is very renowned here. It houses the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy college. It is mostly a commercial area. It is also very close to Lamington road, the technology hub of Mumbai. All in all Charni road is a place with a lot of value.

Mumbai Central Grant Road Charni Road Stations Get Escalators

Mumbai's MMRDA has revised the Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin-tunnel project alignment, requiring 2,298 square metres of sea reclamation near Marine Drive to prevent traffic bottlenecks.

After shelving its Marine Drive road widening plan, MMRDA has proposed altering the alignment of the Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin tunnel project to prevent a bottleneck near Jawahar Bal Bhavan at Charni Road.

Revised alignment requires reclaiming 2,298 square metres of land—approximately one-third the size of a football ground—from the Arabian Sea near Pransukhlal Mafatlal Hindu Swimming Bath & Boating Club Trust. This means the Marine Drive promenade will be moved farther into the Arabian Sea.

Modification will increase project cost by approximately ₹40 crore. Original Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin tunnel project approved March 2023 at ₹8,056 crore.

Road widening necessary to increase lanes outside Jawahar Bal Bhavan from existing eight (four in each direction) to 13. Approximately 300 metres of road between Coastal Road entry-exit points and Mafatlal swimming pool needs widening.

Proposed 13 lanes divided into: three Nariman Point-bound lanes (reduced from four), three lanes for tunnel exits to Nariman Point, three lanes from Nariman Point entering Orange Gate-bound tunnel, four lanes toward Girgaum Chowpatty.

MMRDA has begun obtaining environmental clearance for revised design; proposal submitted to Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority. Twin-tunnel project scheduled completion June 2028.

Original Marine Drive widening plan—from Coastal Road to NCPA, from six to 12 lanes—approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis April 2025 but shelved pending study of traffic impact once tunnels operational.
