Bombay High Court Presses Collector to Clear Charkop Lake Encroachments

The Bombay High Court questioned the Mumbai suburban collector’s inaction on Charkop lake encroachments and ordered the collector to appear on August 14.

The Bombay High Court on August 11 questioned the Mumbai suburban collector over the lack of action to remove encroachments around a natural lake in Charkop, Kandivali West. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad said officials had issued letters but not taken action on the ground, and warned it could seek the collector’s transfer.

The court was hearing a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation petition seeking permission for conservation and beautification work at a natural lake in Charkop Sector 7. The lake lies within a 50-metre mangrove buffer zone; the BMC sought permission to build a gabion wall. On July 21, the court had directed authorities to remove encroachments, citing damage to the lake and mangroves from illegal structures and garbage dumping. The BMC presented photographs showing the lake had been cleaned; the court noted improvement but said work remained.

The collector was directed to appear on August 14 and explain compliance with the earlier order.
