Construction has commenced on a 508-metre foot-over-bridge at Pune’s Chandni Chowk junction along the Bengaluru–Mumbai national highway bypass. It is part of the 1,123-metre Vanaz–Chandni Chowk Metro extension, which will have two stations: Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk. The bridge will connect highway bus stops directly to the upcoming Chandni Chowk Metro station, improving pedestrian access and safety and reducing walking time, accident risk and traffic disruption. Chandni Chowk serves long-distance buses to Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Mumbai, and local traffic towards Hinjewadi, Chakan and Pirangut.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) approved a ₹203 crore upgrade of the Chandani Chowk-Bhugaon corridor, a western entry route used by commuters arriving from the Konkan region. The project includes a two-kilometre flyover, a grade separator and a 30-metre-long, 70-metre-wide bridge over the Ram Nadi. Work and tendering will begin after 80% of the required land, including private land, is acquired. The upgrade comes barely two years after the Centre spent ₹800 crore on a multilevel flyover. PMC has widened roads near Chandani Chowk; the civic limits extend about two kilometres towards Bhugaon, where the development plan earmarks a 60-metre road. Beyond it, the proposed PMRDA Ring Road will connect to the national highway. The project department will execute the work. Rapid urbanisation has brought the area’s population close to 90,000, with projections of three lakh in coming years. The estimate committee cleared the cost on Monday.

On 26 June 2025, the Union Cabinet approved Pune Metro Phase Two, which will comprise two elevated stretches. One will run from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk.

• Phase 2 extends the Vanaz–Ramwadi Line through Vanaz–Chandani Chowk (corridor 2A) and Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (corridor 2B). The elevated corridors total 12.75 km and 13 stations: 1.12 km with two stations to Chandani Chowk, and 11.63 km with 11 stations to Wagholi.
• The ₹3,626.24 crore project will be jointly funded by central and state governments and international-agency loans, with completion targeted in four years. Maha-Metro has started surveys and design; station design is almost complete, contractors are expected to be finalized in the next few months, and construction is likely to start by year-end.
• The routes will serve Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi, connecting residential zones, IT hubs and commercial centres. They are intended to ease congestion on Paud Road and Ahmednagar Road and connect with Lines 1 and 3 at District Court. Long-distance bus terminals serving Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Ahilya Nagar will link with metro hubs at Chandani Chowk and Wagholi.
• Maharashtra approved the extensions in March 2024. PMC will assist with land and financing, share future cost escalations, and the state has cleared interest-free loans for land acquisition, taxes and construction, and temporary use of open government land.

Construction of the long-pending foot overbridge at Pune’s Chandni Chowk flyover began by April 27, 2025. The facility is intended to help pedestrians cross the highway and service lanes; there is currently no dedicated pedestrian bridge or underpass at the junction. NHAI is carrying out the work and expects to complete it within three months, by July. Pillar foundation work is underway, followed by phased installation of the frame and span. The bridge will be over 100 metres long, connecting near the flyover wing towards Bavdhan to the wing towards Bhugaon. One column is being built on the main carriageway, with NHAI planning the work to avoid disrupting traffic.
