Key facts

Grayshott Apartment, a 110-flat society in Bishop Garden Extension, Raja Annamalai Puram, has integrated composting into its routine. Its GoGreen group, started in 2017, studied models at Jains Saagarika in MRC Nagar, Ashiana Apartments in Venus Colony, Ceebros Boulevard in Thoraipakkam, Thiruvengadam Street in Mandaveli and IIT-Madras before choosing cement-tank composting.

In 2019, the society invested ₹60,000 in a four-layer tank. Kitchen waste is layered with cow dung and neem leaves; compost is ready after 45 days. After odour complaints, the community switched to native cow dung sourced from Vriksha in RA Puram. The society now produces 100–150 kilos monthly for its garden and shares surplus with neighbouring apartments and others. The tank was moved to a corner and refurbished, with housekeeping staff consulted. The committee also collects e-waste and plans awareness campaigns involving children. With support from the Rain Centre, the society dug two open wells that supplement Metrowater supply; it no longer buys water.
