BMC Plans 2,500 Homes at Arthur Road Sanitation Colony

BMC plans to replace 225 Arthur Road sanitation-worker homes with nearly 2,500 units, offering residents monthly rent and relocation assistance during redevelopment.

Under the Ashray Yojana, Mumbai plans to redevelop 30 of its 46 sanitation-worker quarters, including the Arthur Road municipal colony. The 225 existing homes will be cleared and replaced with nearly 2,500 units. Residents will receive Rs 20,000 monthly rent and a Rs 75,000 relocation allowance; the project will cost Rs 5.4 crore annually. Of four religious structures on the site, three have been relocated. The Lakshmi Narayan temple is being shifted, not demolished. Temple relocation is expected to finish within 10 days, after which the project will commence.

Maharashtra Seeks Development Plan Concession for Arthur Road Jail Rebuild

Maharashtra plans a ground-plus-four-storey Arthur Road jail for 5,000 inmates and will seek a civic concession to avoid surrendering land for road widening.

Minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam directed officials to prepare a plan to redevelop Arthur Road Jail as a ground-plus-four-storey prison for 5,000 inmates. The British-era jail has capacity for 800 but houses up to 3,500. Mumbai’s Development Plan requires the jail to surrender land currently occupied by staff quarters; that land would widen the road outside by 15 metres, making it 35 metres wide. The state will ask the BMC commissioner for a concession. The redevelopment would be phased, with four temporary barracks inside the premises. The new jail would have three courtrooms, reducing inmate transfers for hearings. Officials are to visit a Singapore jail before preparing the plan. Kadam also asked officials to work on plot reservations on 22 acres in Mankhurd for a new jail. The state is also planning to redevelop Byculla Jail for women.
