Issues reported: sewage stagnation in construction pit, blockages requiring jetting machines, sewage flowing back into houses, foul odour and public hygiene risks.

State Highways Department National Highways wing identified leaks at three locations; two repaired, one repair scheduled for Monday. Pipelines must be shifted to accommodate flyover structural requirements. New pipeline will be laid after flyover completion. Repair responsibility assigned to Highways Department.

Coimbatore Plans Drainage Upgrade to End Waterlogging at MGR Market

Coimbatore Corporation plans to raise MGR Market and deepen its drain after a ₹3 crore road and drainage project stalled at 70% completion.

A ₹3 crore project to lay a cement road and improve drainage at MGR Wholesale Market on Mettupalayam Road began two years ago but is only 70% complete; work stopped due to financial constraints. Waterlogging during rains affects 112 shops and creates unhygienic conditions. The market is lower than the adjacent road, and the old, narrow stormwater drain cannot handle runoff from surrounding areas.

The Corporation proposes raising the market level and deepening the drain to two metres. An estimate will be sent to the Commissioner for approval. It also plans to reconstruct a 500-metre stretch from the Jeeva Nagar Road intersection to Sivananda Colony junction, which collects runoff from several interior drains. The Corporation is coordinating with the Highways Department over nearby bridge work; if highways funds are unavailable, it will submit a separate proposal. Vendors will be shifted between market bays so trading can continue during renovation.
