The ₹646.71-crore 24x7 drinking water project involves extensive pipeline-laying across Coimbatore city. Excavation for pipeline work has reduced usable road space, made turning movements difficult, and created uneven and muddy surfaces. Residents and shop owners face difficulties accessing side roads, parking, and premises. Loose soil and sludge worsen conditions during rains.

Mettupalayam Road has been particularly affected, especially near Saibaba Colony junction where service roads were already in poor condition. A government bus recently got stuck in mud and sludge at this junction.

Avinashi Road work from city towards airport has been completed and restored. About 13 km of pipeline work on the other side, from airport towards city, remains to be taken up. On Mettupalayam Road, only minor stretches remain, with completion and restoration planned shortly.

For roads under State Highways Department (including Avinashi Road), the Corporation will provide funds for restoration. On National Highways jurisdiction roads, the Corporation will undertake relaying work.

The Saibaba Colony flyover on Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore, connecting Alagesan Road with MTP Road New Bus Terminus near Eru Company, is delayed beyond its scheduled March 2026 completion. The 975-metre-long, 16.61-metre-wide flyover costs Rs 52 crore and requires 23 pillars and 22 decks, most completed. Construction began September 19, 2024. Delay caused by Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) not allocating land inside Anna Vegetable Market complex for a new EB high-tension tower to relocate existing power lines crossing the National Highway 181 stretch. Four to five market traders refusing to vacate shops where the tower is planned; four rounds of talks held without resolution. CCMC Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran stated paperwork for government land transfer in progress and further talks with traders planned to avoid forcibly vacating them.

The much-delayed rectification work on the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover on Mettupalayam Road has commenced. Land acquisition from seven property owners is complete, and compensation of Rs 1.5 crore is expected by week's end, after which notices to vacate will be issued and affected buildings demolished.

The Centre sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for rectification and upgrade seven months ago, but work stalled due to negotiations with landowners. The service road alignment will be corrected by widening the stretch, and street lights will be installed. The contractor has been instructed to complete work within six months (contract period is nine months).

The 1,850m flyover was built at Rs 115.5 crore, completed December 2023. Since inauguration it has been plagued by design flaws: undulations and bumps, absent street lights and stormwater drains, and a dangerously aligned service road. At the 0-point junction, vehicles from Coimbatore heading to Mettupalayam must make a sharp 90-degree right turn to merge, followed by an abrupt left to avoid oncoming traffic, violating Indian Road Congress guidelines. Following representations to the Prime Minister's Office highlighting structural flaws, MoRTH prepared a detailed project report for corrective measures.
