KG Group's Town and City Developers launched United City, a new residential project at EllaiThottam Road, Peelamedu.

Residents criticized the Coimbatore corporation for delay in constructing a subway at Peelamedu railway crossing. They alleged the civic body failed to acquire land for construction. Around 27 people have been fatally hit by trains at the crossing in recent years. Many schools surround the area; more than 800 people, school and college students, cross the tracks daily. The Peelamedu flyover was proposed in 2014 with a planned subway for two-wheelers and cars; the flyover was completed in 2017 but the subway was never initiated. According to an RTI reply from NABARD (the executing body), 29.5 cents of land has not been acquired and handed over by the corporation. The planned subway measures 16 feet in width. A groundbreaking ceremony was conducted two months ago, but the project will stall unless the corporation hands over the required land.

A CII Coimbatore–EY report says Coimbatore has 75 GCCs and targets 200 by 2032. The city has 3.8 million residents, over 300,000 technology workers, 137 engineering colleges and more than 30,000 annual STEM graduates. Office rents are ₹55–70 per sq ft monthly, compared with Bengaluru’s ₹75–125; senior-engineer attrition is 8%–12%, versus 18%–22% in Bengaluru.

Existing business locations include TIDEL Park near Peelamedu; KGiSL SEZ IT Park (CHIL SEZ) in Saravanampatti; India Land Tech Park; ELCOT SEZ & IT Park in Vilankurichi; SVB Techpark in Kalapatti; and Rathinam Tech Park. Tamil Nadu’s payroll incentive for high-paying jobs offers 30%, 20% and 10% of costs in years one, two and three, from April 2024 to March 2027; Coimbatore is one of three priority cities.

The airport expansion is worth over ₹2,000 crore and will quadruple terminal size; a ₹9,000 crore metro has been approved, and the Avinashi Road Elevated Expressway is being built. SNS iHub aims to support 1,000 startups over ten years and works with over 300 mentors and 50 investors. Coimbatore has 8–10 million sq ft of office stock; property prices average ₹5,918 per sq ft, while 2BHK rents range from ₹6,000 to nearly ₹45,000 monthly, with high rents around CHIL SEZ and other IT parks.

Peelamedu residents have urged authorities to speed up construction of the Thaneerpandal railway overbridge, which began a year ago after prolonged delays. Civil work has progressed at the northern end, but work at the southern gate remains stalled. Residents blame the slow pace on the contractor deploying inadequate manpower and want authorities to intervene, increase the workforce and complete the bridge to ease daily congestion at the level crossing.

The ₹646.71-crore 24x7 drinking water project involves extensive pipeline-laying across Coimbatore city. Excavation for pipeline work has reduced usable road space, made turning movements difficult, and created uneven and muddy surfaces. Residents and shop owners face difficulties accessing side roads, parking, and premises. Loose soil and sludge worsen conditions during rains.

Mettupalayam Road has been particularly affected, especially near Saibaba Colony junction where service roads were already in poor condition. A government bus recently got stuck in mud and sludge at this junction.

Avinashi Road work from city towards airport has been completed and restored. About 13 km of pipeline work on the other side, from airport towards city, remains to be taken up. On Mettupalayam Road, only minor stretches remain, with completion and restoration planned shortly.

For roads under State Highways Department (including Avinashi Road), the Corporation will provide funds for restoration. On National Highways jurisdiction roads, the Corporation will undertake relaying work.
