The S-Bend project at Vilankurichi-Thaneerpandal Road junction (ward 24, East Zone) connects four major roads: CODISSIA Road, Vilankurichi Road, Gandhima Nagar Road and Thaneerpandal Road. The junction is a critical traffic point with heavy all-day congestion. More than 10 houses and shops located near the road curve restrict visibility and road width.

CCMC sanctioned Rs 6.05 crore to acquire 39.73 cents of land and carry out junction improvement works. About 12 individuals own 39 cents of land at the junction. Initial compensation demand: Rs 4,500 per sq ft for land and Rs 500 per sq ft for buildings. After renegotiation with finance department, revised rate: Rs 3,500 per sq ft for both land and buildings. Total project cost estimated at Rs 6,55,72,358 including land acquisition and roundabout construction.

Project first announced over three years ago. G.O. passed February 27, 2026. District collector appointed special DRO and instructed revenue officials to expedite land acquisition on March 13, 2026. Model Code of Conduct and election work caused delays. Collector now directing revenue officials to complete process. CCMC official expects project work to begin soon.

Junction location: Intersection of Vilankurichi Road, Thanneerpandal Road, CODISSIA Road and Gandhi Maa Nagar Road.

Current conditions: Major commercial corridors with substantial daily vehicular movement, numerous warehouses causing frequent heavy vehicle traffic, congestion and delays at peak hours.

Planned improvements: Road widening, geometric improvements to streamline traffic flow, improve road safety, and construct a roundabout after land acquisition completion. Expected to ease traffic and enhance connectivity to eastern city parts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated ELCOT IT Park at Vilankurichi on Tuesday. The six-storey IT park measures 2.94 lakh sqft, constructed at Rs 158.32 crore cost, and is expected to generate 3,500 jobs.

Building features: two basement levels for parking, ground floor office space, eight lifts, fire fighting facilities, telecommunication infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, 30,000-litre diesel storage tank (72-hour generator operation capability), 6 lakh litre underground water tank, 1.35 lakh litre overhead water tank, and 130 KLD sewage treatment plant.

CM handed over lease allotment orders to IT companies at the event. Seven IT companies received allotments; startup IT companies eligible under co-working system.

IT Minister PTR Palanivel Thiaga Rajan noted the park was announced in 2020 but stalled due to irregularities. ELCOT Managing Director R Kannan stated plans to construct two more buildings on remaining 17.17 acres at Rs 2,000 crore cost (including Rs 240 crore land cost), potentially creating 35,000 jobs if government sanctions the project.
