Widening work on the Mettupalayam-Avinashi road has stalled at several locations for nearly two months, raising concerns, particularly over delays in completing a bridge.

Several Avinashi Road bus shelters were removed during construction of the GD Naidu flyover, leaving passengers exposed to sun and rain. Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation plans to install additional shelters and repair damaged ones. In 2025, the state highways department paid the corporation ₹2.64 crore to install shelters at 19 locations. Of these, nine locations from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins had no shelters, while shelters at the others were in poor condition. Officials identified 32 locations in 2025: 15 on the Uppilipalayam-to-Goldwins stretch and 17 on the opposite carriageway.

Coimbatore city police installed a makeshift height barrier and warning board at the Avinashi Road old flyover underpass on Brooke Bond Road after repeated complaints about tall vehicles getting stuck and disrupting traffic. The narrow passage carries one-way traffic, and a trapped vehicle can affect the entire stretch. The board lists vehicle height limits; cars, autorickshaws and bikes can pass. Police said a sponsored barrier installed a year earlier had been knocked down and argued the highways department should provide a stronger one. The department said the issue was outside its purview. Police eventually installed the makeshift barrier.

A composite steel girder will be launched over the railway track between Irugur and Peelamedu stations near Hope College Junction. From July 9 to 13, trains will be diverted via Podanur-Irugur, skipping Coimbatore Junction; Podanur Junction will be the temporary stop. Services affected include trains 16316, 22503, 16317, 22669, 16187 and 18567. Train 12671 will skip Coimbatore North but continue to Mettupalayam via Coimbatore Junction after reaching Podanur.

Coimbatore City Police will close Avinashi Road in both directions between Pioneer Mill Junction and Coimbatore Medical College from 11 pm to 6 am daily. Outbound buses and heavy vehicles will use Lakshmi Mills Junction, Ramanathapuram, Singanallur, Ondipudur and the L&T bypass; cars and two-wheelers can detour via Rottikadai Maithanam, Gandhi Nagar, Thanneer Panthal Road and Tidel Park. Incoming traffic can use routes via Thottipalayam, Kalapatti, Vilankurichi and Saravanampatti, or turn at SITRA Junction onto Kalapatti Road. Light vehicles can enter via Codissia or CMC Junction. Singanallur traffic should use the L&T bypass via Chinthamaniputhur and Ondipudur.

The ₹1,791.23-crore, 10.1-km flyover from Uppilipalayam was scheduled for completion in August 2024. Of 304 decks on its four-lane main carriageway, 301 have been laid. Railways must install a 52-metre steel girder near Hope College before two concrete decks can be laid; the girder is being transported in parts after multiple tests.

The flyover has eight ramps, each six metres wide; deck work is complete on five. The main carriageway and seven ramps could be completed in July 2025, while the remaining ramp may take longer. Coimbatore Corporation will install 32 bus shelters along the six-lane surface-level service road at a cost of ₹2.64 crore.

The Highways Department is preparing a detailed project report to extend the flyover to Neelambur and coordinating with Chennai Metro Rail, which has a proposal for a metro on Avinashi Road. Road users have raised concerns about traffic congestion where the main ramps end at Uppilipalayam and Goldwins.
