Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation halted boating in Ukkadam Periyakulam as directed by Madras high court on September 18. The court order came while hearing a writ petition by environmental activist S Muralidharan seeking removal of solar panels in Ukkadam and Valankulam lakes. The court criticized the corporation for operating petrol-engine motorised boats despite prior instructions.

The Tamil Nadu MAWS department passed a Government Order to rent CCMC land at Pullukadu in Ukkadam to the Coimbatore District Retail Fish Traders Association. The retail fish market was relocated from Perur Bypass Road to Pullukadu (1.06 acres) after traders were evicted. The association built 72 shops over a year ago and awaited government approval. Sanitary workers evicted from near the old market were shifted to temporary shelters for a flyover project. Of 727 displaced residents, the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board built 235 houses through Ukkadam Project IV. A 520-unit housing block was planned for the remaining 492; only 222 units started in 2020 remain incomplete. To construct the remaining 298 units, officials decided to shift traders to the new market and demolish the old market building. Once traders relocate, approximately 400 houses will be built on the old market land for displaced people. The Government Order imposed conditions: 21 shops must clear pending dues by deadline or remaining 51 shops can be handed over; traders must obtain NOC for no pending dues, maintain facilities, dispose fish waste regularly, pay one year's rent as security deposit, pay rent by 10th monthly, and enter into agreement with CCMC.

Coimbatore Metro was proposed in 2010. Tamil Nadu announced a monorail in 2011; a 2013 survey by former Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan said the city qualified for a metro. The proposal was revived in 2017, and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was assigned a detailed project report in 2018. A 39-km plan costing ₹10,740 crore covered elevated corridors on Avinashi Road to Karumathampatti and from Ukkadam to Valiyampalayam Junction. Tamil Nadu announced ₹6,683 crore for the project in 2021.

CMRL initially proposed a three-phase, 138.9-km Metro Lite costing ₹9,424 crore. In July 2023, it proposed a 39-km elevated metro costing ₹9,000 crore, with 32 stations: Ukkadam–Neelambur and an airport link (17 stations), and Coimbatore railway junction–Valiyampalayam (14). The plan required 38–40 acres for depots and 35 acres for carriageway; three-coach trains would carry 250 people per coach, with five-to-seven-minute service.

Tamil Nadu recommended the project on February 16 and November 29, 2024. In a November 14, 2025 reply, the Union housing ministry cited only 2–3 minutes’ estimated time savings, 2011 city population of 15.84 lakh, projected daily ridership of 5.9 lakh for 34 km, and rights of way under 20 metres on NH Road and Big Bazaar Road. A revised proposal submitted May 22 was returned on July 22; the ministry cited missing non-peak travel-time savings, an underdeveloped bus system and inadequate last-mile connectivity. Proposals to connect Tiruppur, Pollachi and Mettupalayam have also been raised.

The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has been directed to prepare a proposal for rental apartments on its 3.3-acre and 6.41-acre properties in Coimbatore’s Race Course area, similar to its Kavundampalayam project. Directorate of Town and Country Planning approval is expected shortly. No work has taken place for more than 10 years since demolition of 108 houses in DFO Compound and 222 at Thomas Park Housing Unit. Housing and Urban Development Minister P. Rajkumar directed officials to pursue the project.

At Kavundampalayam, 1,848 flats in a 14-floor complex built for ₹512 crore in 2016 were allotted in 2021; all but 15–20 are occupied. The complex has 56 three-bedroom A-type flats (1,192.53 sq ft), 294 two-bedroom B-type (920 sq ft), 1,148 single-bedroom C-type (761.27 sq ft) and 350 single-bedroom D-type (558.23 sq ft).

The minister also reviewed projects for high-income apartments in Ganapathy, middle-income apartments in Singanallur, rental housing, flats and plots, saleable plots and redevelopment, as well as housing schemes in Pollachi and Seeranaickenpalayam. Officials submitted land-acquisition, compensation and pending-issue files. He directed the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board to expedite projects at CMC Colony in Ukkadam, Variety Hall Road, Ezhil Nagar and elsewhere in the district, and prioritise petitions for basic amenities.

Families of conservancy workers displaced from CMC Colony for the Ukkadam flyover took part in a lottery-based housing allotment on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

In 2019, nearly 500 families were moved to temporary shelters near the Pullukadu housing unit, with permanent homes promised within two years. The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) built 222 tenements on 17,860 sq. ft. near Ukkadam fish market. Construction was completed over a year ago, but allotments were delayed.

TNUHDB officials said the 222 units are being allotted by lottery; allotment orders were expected within a week, followed by handover of keys. Of 512 identified beneficiaries, 272 are single-beneficiary households. Families with two eligible members have already received one unit; remaining applicants will be accommodated in a second phase.

Madurai Veeran said only one of his mother and sister appeared on the list; officials told him his sister had received a house under another unit, so his mother would be considered in the second phase.

A proposal for 298 additional units on the old fish market site was submitted to the State government. Construction will begin after funds are sanctioned.
