NTPC Plans One-Tonne Daily Green Hydrogen Plant in Greater Noida

NTPC will set up a green hydrogen facility at the NETRA campus in Greater Noida through NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance, its research and development arm. The plant will use plasma gasification to convert waste into tar-free syngas, which will be processed into hydrogen using pressure swing adsorption or membrane-based technology. Its planned capacity is one tonne per day.

NTPC operates under the Ministry of Power and contributes nearly one-fourth of India’s electricity generation capacity. Its installed capacity exceeds 85 GW, with 30.90 GW under construction, including around 13.3 GW of renewable energy projects. NTPC targets 149 GW of installed capacity by 2032, including 60 GW renewable, and 244 GW by 2037.

NTPC, under the Ministry of Power, contributes one-fourth of India’s power requirements. It has installed capacity of over 85 GW and 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. It aims to reach 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable capacity, and 244 GW overall by 2037.

NTPC Plans Hydrogen Bus Pilot Across YEIDA Sectors

NTPC plans four hydrogen buses in YEIDA, while Uttar Pradesh has approved ₹675 crore for 500 electric buses across Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA.

NTPC’s three-year pilot will deploy four air-conditioned, 45-seater hydrogen fuel-cell buses in the YEIDA region. Operations are due to begin by mid-November, subject to a final review at the YEIDA board meeting on November 7. It will be NTPC’s second hydrogen-bus operation, after Leh-Ladakh, and its first in NCR; Indian Oil began a similar initiative in Delhi in September 2024.

The buses will initially connect YEIDA with Noida and Greater Noida, with later links to Noida International Airport. Proposed routes include the Delhi–Agra corridor and the Noida Airport link. Hydrogen will be produced and compressed at NTPC’s Greater Noida plant and supplied at a dedicated station. NTPC will handle fuel production, maintenance and staff training; YEIDA will manage operations, routes, permits and fares. Each bus is expected to travel about 600 km per refill. Production capacity of 260 kg daily could support up to 10 lakh fleet kilometres annually, assuming 300 operating days.

Uttar Pradesh has approved ₹675 crore for 500 electric buses across Noida, Greater Noida and along the Yamuna Expressway, including 100 for YEIDA. They will run every 10–15 minutes during peak hours, connecting residential and industrial hubs with the airport, where internal vehicles will be electric.
