The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s K/West Ward issued notices to owners and occupiers whose properties fall within the proposed 27.45-metre S V Road widening alignment at Irla. Residents say the layout includes the area around the Irla Junction Holy Cross, but its custodians have received no notice.

Advocates Godfrey Pimenta and Nicholas Almeida of the Watchdog Foundation said the cross is a Category A protected heritage structure, recognised by a State Government Resolution dated 5 May 2011 following Supreme Court directives on religious shrines in public spaces. The St John the Baptist Church Save Committee is identified as its custodian. Local sources told the advocates the shrine, at the junction of S V Road and Ram Ganesh Gadkari Marg, could be affected.

The foundation said the cross’s legal protection is on record before the Bombay High Court. Pimenta said the group supports widening but wants written assurance the cross will be relocated, not destroyed, citing a protected cross shifted during construction of Mahim’s underground Shitladevi Metro station. He warned that action without heritage and statutory approvals would violate the law and court orders. K/West Ward Assistant Municipal Commissioner Chakrapani Alle said he was unaware of the matter and needed more details; he did not respond to follow-up queries.

The bridge over Irla nullah has been closed for the past month, forcing residents of Juhu and Vile Parle to take a 2-km detour. Residents said they were unclear about the reason for the closure and speculated that repairs may be underway, while urging the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to restore connectivity. The bridge was also closed for eight to nine months in 2023; residents said workers accidentally damaged a pipe then, cutting off water supply to the area for a few days.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will replace the old Irla Nullah bridge near the Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) scheme, after it was declared unsafe and unsuitable for repairs in 2022. The project will cost ₹10.24 crore, with a 15-month deadline; the contract has been awarded to M/s Samruddhi Enterprises.

The 22-metre-wide replacement will be built in phases, closing one lane at a time, after the BMC obtains a traffic-diversion No-Objection Certificate from Mumbai Traffic Police. Traffic may alternatively use a road behind Chandan Cinema near the PVR multiplex. Temporary measures kept the existing bridge open because it is the only route linking Moragaon and JVPD.

The bridge is part of the ongoing Bandra–Versova section of the Mumbai Coastal Road project and will serve as a feeder route. It will improve connectivity for Moragaon, Juhu and surrounding areas. A proposed Development Plan road near Ritumbara College could further ease congestion at the JVPD junction. Built before the BRIMSTOWAD project, the bridge has utilities and a water main beneath it; the replacement will be raised to avoid monsoon floodwaters.

The BMC will demolish and rebuild the bridge over Irla Nullah near the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme (JVPD) junction. The project is expected to take 15 months and cost ₹11.15 crore, including taxes.

A 2022 audit by BMC-appointed structural auditor M/s ASG Consultancy found the bridge connecting Moragaon and the Irla pumping station to be in disrepair. Its stone structure has corroded steel supporting the slab, partially collapsed protective walls and noticeable sagging on the western side. Two water pipes, measuring 900 mm and 300 mm, run beside the footpaths. The consultant recommended replacement.

The bridge is 28 metres long and 18.3 metres wide, with an RCC piles foundation. BMC estimated the work at ₹10.31 crore and received four bids, ranging from 13% to 15% below the estimate. M/s Samruddhi Enterprises won with the lowest bid, 15% below estimate. Administrative approval was granted before the state assembly election model code of conduct was announced.
