PMC Fire Brigade conducted inspections across Pune directed by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, with Chief Fire Officer Ganesh Sonune leading. In Wadgaon Budruk, Narhe and Dhayari on Sunday, 13 PGs and 7 scrap-material shops and godowns were found operating without mandatory permissions and safety measures and ordered shut.

Officials found establishments storing large quantities of plastic, paper, steel, iron scrap, sacks and other inflammable materials without adequate fire-safety equipment and firefighting arrangements. Several operated from rented premises without proper permissions.

On Saturday: 36 establishments inspected across Shivajinagar, Navi Peth and Lohegaon, including 21 PGs and hostels, 13 coaching classes, a study centre and a fitness gym. Notices issued for violations of fire safety norms, BDP zones, road width, firefighting systems, authorised electricity supply, drainage and property tax requirements.

On Friday: 11 PG hostels in Lohegaon and Nimbalkar Nagar sealed for failing to meet fire safety requirements and lacking building permissions, drainage and water clearances, structural audit reports, tax records and fire NOCs.

CFO Sonune stated establishments failing to comply would face closure and legal proceedings. PMC drive will continue covering PGs, student accommodation, coaching classes and hospitals. Educational institutions warned against referring students to unauthorised or unsafe premises.

In early January 2025, gastrointestinal illness cases spike in DSK Vishwa, a nine-society township in Dhayari, western Pune. Patients later diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder causing temporary or lifelong paralysis. One resident, Pravin Vibhute (40), died on January 26 – first of five GBS deaths in Maharashtra since early January.

By February 6: 173 suspected GBS cases in and around Pune – 34 from Pune Municipal Corporation, 87 from nearby villages, 22 from Pimpri Chinchwad, remainder from rural regions. At least 55 patients in intensive care, 21 on ventilator support. In last seven days, 18 new cases detected.

State health officials trace outbreak to bacterial and viral infections; bacteria campylobacter jejuni spreads through contaminated water. Stool samples show multiple pathogens: norovirus in 21 patients, campylobacter jejuni in four, Epstein-Barr virus in one.

Water source: large well at Nanded Phata along Mutha river supplies DSK Vishwa township and three villages (Nanded, Kirkatwadi, Dhayari). State health minister states 80% of reported cases from areas around this well. Water from well receives only chlorination, no filtration or purification before supply. Well managed first by gram panchayat, later transferred to Pune Municipal Corporation.

Three villages reported at least 63 GBS cases total. Residents complained of water supplied without adequate chlorination and filtration. DSK Vishwa residents held "janata durbar" on February 2 to discuss restarting their filtration plant. Residents criticized PMC for failing to provide civic amenities despite paying taxes; noted no corporators available to communicate with since municipal elections not held since terms expired 2020–2023 (PMC term ended March 2022).

DSK Vishwa is a large township of nearly 3,500 flats in Dhayari, Pune. Starting early January, doctors with practices inside the township began noticing a significant surge in patients presenting with diarrhoea and gastrointestinal issues. Dr Sushmita Dutta reported her clinic suddenly received a worrying number of such cases. Another doctor practising in the township observed the same pattern. By January 7, one doctor noted 80% of patients presenting had diarrhoea-related complaints.
