Sawant Seeks Darukhana Families’ Return After Hutment Demolition

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant raised the Darukhana demolition through a Rule 377 notice in the Lok Sabha on August 10, 2026, urging the Centre to let displaced families reoccupy their homes until rehabilitation is completed. Nearly 98 hutments on Mumbai Port Authority land were demolished on the eve of the monsoon, displacing families who had lived there for decades. Sawant said the then Shipping Minister had assured Parliament that rehabilitation would follow Maharashtra’s Slum Rehabilitation Scheme. He had previously raised rehabilitation of hutment dwellers on Central Government land, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had responded positively, but he said this did not match conditions on the ground. He cited families living on land belonging to the Railways, Mumbai Port Authority, BARC, Defence establishments, Airports Authority of India, LIC and other Central Government ministries. He said ministries cite the absence of a comprehensive rehabilitation policy as preventing action.
