Coastal Road Pile Testing Causes Vibrations in Charkop Buildings

Pile testing for Mumbai’s Coastal Road interconnector caused strong vibrations in Charkop Sector 8 buildings, prompting residents to stop work and seek assurances.

Residents of buildings in Charkop Sector 8 reported strong vibrations during pile testing for the Coastal Road’s Charkop interconnector on Wednesday afternoon. Residents of the seven-storey Sea Mist building said beds shook and window panes rattled. A structural audit of flats near the site had been conducted in September 2025 as a pre-project exercise.

Residents stopped the piling work, and building authorities wrote to the bridges department seeking an explanation. Anil Malhotra, chairman of Charkop Shree Gajanan CHS, said the department should take responsibility for any damage. Mili Shetty of the Charkop Sector 8 Vikas Samiti, representing about 22 buildings and 40 cluster societies, convened a residents’ meeting with local legislator Sanjay Upadhyay.

The bridges department said it changed the work methodology and restarted work the following day. Vibration sensors are monitoring whether levels remain within permissible limits.
