Residents of the Central Government Employee Colony (CGS) at Antop Hill began an indefinite protest on Saturday, demanding stronger campus security and closure of a public shortcut. The 90-acre green colony has 150 buildings and around 10,000 residents, many employed in income tax, customs, excise, defence services and the Intelligence Bureau.

Residents allege outsiders use the shortcut to enter the colony, and cite broken boundary walls, break-ins at locked homes, and 21 gardens rendered unusable by outsiders, couples, drunkards and drug users. Women reported harassment and said children cannot safely play or run errands. The residents’ welfare association began raising funds for private guards, who residents say were threatened by nearby slum dwellers; they also allege inadequate police help.

Antop Hill Police Station senior inspector Shivaji Pawle said patrolling had increased and described the colony as secure, with gated boundaries and an assistant police commissioner’s office. Sion-Koliwada MLA Tamil Selvan opposes closing the shortcut, citing two schools, a hospital, two clinics, a pathology lab and the ACP’s office inside; he said some residents also want exits accessible. A CPWD official said the matter had been taken up and security was the residents’ welfare association’s responsibility.
