The Highways Department is awaiting the team’s report before undertaking permanent repairs. Meanwhile, it has sealed 20 water-entry points with polymer foam, removed sections of the worn wearing coat and begun waterproofing. High water levels and water from neighbouring areas contribute to the stagnation; the slippery surface has prompted complaints and accidents, particularly involving two-wheelers. A daily user from Nanganallur said he suffered multiple fractures and bruises in an accident there six months ago. A retired Highways Department engineer said five vehicular subways connecting southern localities to GST Road flood every monsoon. A proposal to replace the Thillai Ganga Nagar subway with a road overbridge has not advanced.

  • Work began in April 2008. Land acquisition disputes over the final 500 metres, involving about 75 houses in Adambakkam and Thillai Ganga Nagar, delayed the project nearly 15 years. Owners challenged compensation under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, seeking compensation under the 2013 land acquisition law. The Madras High Court dismissed 40 petitions in 2019.
  • In August 2025, the Ministry of Railways approved transferring MRTS operations to CMRL, a proposal initiated by Tamil Nadu in 2011.
