TNUHDB said residents’ reluctance to vacate is delaying reconstruction; the local MLA is arranging temporary accommodation. A 2019 technical committee involving Anna University and IIT-M recommended reconstructing over 20,000 Chennai houses. Work began under 21 schemes last year and 17 this year; 7,000–8,000 houses are planned for reconstruction in 2025. Separately, ceiling plaster collapsed at a Mambalam TNUHDB tenement on Sunday; its resident escaped injury.

Police officials urged them to end the agitation, which brought traffic on Greenways Road to a standstill that morning.
