Perungudi Lake Residents Tackle Returning Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth has returned to Perungudi Lake after nearly a decade, prompting residents to organize clean-ups and seek government support for restoration.

Water hyacinth has spread rapidly across Perungudi Lake in recent months, after being absent for nearly a decade. Members of the Perungudi Lake Area Neighbourhood Environment Transformation (PLANET) Association held a manual clean-up on Saturday and urged the Greater Chennai Corporation, Public Works Department and Water Resources Department to help clear the weed and protect the lake.

PLANET’s Shaju John said the weed restricts water movement, increases stagnation and reduces oxygen. More than 1,000 fish died in May and June 2026. The lake is 30–40 feet deep, making manual removal difficult. Sewage discharged by some households through an old stormwater drain, washing by residents from nearby Kallukuttai and encroachments on the banks were cited as pollution concerns.

Cleaning drives and festivals took place in 2016, 2017 and 2018, before stopping after the COVID-19 pandemic. The lake was desilted around 2014 and has held water since the 2015 Chennai floods. PLANET member Prem Kumar said a government scheme introduced three to six months earlier to store treated sewage water in the lake may be linked to the weed’s growth. Residents called for regular removal, preventing encroachments, protecting walking paths, scientific restoration and community participation.

About 600 voters in Kamarajar Nagar, Perungudi, plan to boycott the upcoming Assembly election, saying the DMK and AIADMK have failed to resolve a land-patta issue lasting more than five decades. Perungudi is part of the Sholinganallur Assembly constituency.

Created in 1984, Kamarajar Nagar has more than 200 plots. Residents say they have manual pattas but have not received computerised pattas; officials cite the Land Ceiling Act. The plots were purchased through the Kanniyakumari Nadar Association housing society, and residents say they obtained approvals, including manual pattas, and built houses.

Residents say the Supreme Court in 2016 upheld a Madras High Court order against a State government order designating the plots under the Land Ceiling Act. The Revenue Department has not issued computerised pattas, which are now mandatory for property sales after the department upgraded its system.
