Noida Authority ordered residents of 128 Janta and economically weaker section (EWS) flats in Sector 31 to vacate after a roof collapsed on Sunday following rain. A family of five, including three children, escaped; three water tanks and years of seepage had weakened the roof. An Authority inspection found the building unfit for habitation, citing poor maintenance and structural alterations. The collapse destroyed furniture and appliances; occupants moved temporarily to a hotel, and the flat below was also vacated. Built by the Authority in the early 1980s, the flats have cracked outer walls, leaking ceilings, damaged balconies and widespread seepage. Some residents added rooms or extended balconies; tenants cited the area’s central connectivity. The Authority will advise owners of other EWS buildings to assess their safety. Under a redevelopment policy approved in June 2025, it plans to seek board approval before floating a tender. The policy covers buildings over 30 years old or declared unsafe by engineering institutes.
