News

New suburban railway station planned between Thane and Mulund

Railways will fund and execute the stalled suburban station between Thane and Mulund, easing congestion at Thane and Mulund stations.

  • Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a phone call that the Railways will fund and execute the stalled project.
  • The project had been delayed because Thane Smart City Limited lacked funds.
  • The new suburban station is planned on the western side between Thane and Mulund, on 14.83 acres of land belonging to Thane Mental Hospital.
  • It is expected to reduce passenger footfall at Thane station by 31% and Mulund station by 24%.
  • Thane station currently handles over 7 lakh commuters daily.
  • The station will serve commuters from Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road and Wagle Estate.
  • Planned facilities include vehicular parking, an external deck and a bus terminus.
  • Conceptualised in 2019, the project was initially approved under Thane Smart Projects Limited / Thane Smart City Limited.
  • Cost rose from ₹120 crore to ₹254 crore after COVID-19 delays and 18% GST.
