Reconstruction of three bridges across the Kodungaiyur canal has not begun more than a year after it was announced in April 2025 as a flood-mitigation project. The ₹7.2-crore plan would raise the bridges to improve water flow: South Avenue Road (₹2.8 crore), North Avenue Road (₹2.9 crore) and Cauvery Salai (₹1.4 crore). The Greater Chennai Corporation had promised completion before the 2025 monsoon. Tenders were floated two or three times, but attracted no bidders; traffic-diversion police permissions and the corporation’s funding crunch have also delayed the work. Councillor S Jeevan said the 20–25-year-old bridges restrict water flow and prevent desilting underneath. In 2024, canal overflow caused waist-deep waterlogging in parts of Muthamizh Nagar and nearby areas. Nearly 3,000 residents are affected each monsoon, resident LM Jai Ganesh said. Jeevan urged the corporation to tender the bridges individually if necessary.
