Railway wall blocks maids' commute in Begumpet Hyderabad

A newly built railway wall in Begumpet cuts off access for over 1,000 maids from low-income areas Brahmanwadi and Matajinagar who serve 2,500 households across tracks.

Key facts

Over 1,000 maids reside on the northern side of Begumpet railway tracks in Matajinagar and Brahmanwadi but serve over 2,500 households in Methodist Colony, Umanagar and Kundanbagh on the southern side. They earn Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 monthly, many working in multiple houses. Most originate from Mahbubnagar and Siddipet districts.

Railway authorities recently built a wall to reduce track accidents, blocking the maids' traditional crossing route. This forces them to take a longer route via Begumpet station, increasing commute time and auto-rickshaw costs.

Major Shiva Kiran of United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations noted the problem extends along the entire railway stretch from Rajbhavan to MS Makhta to Begumpet, with large unwalled tracts remaining while access areas used by maids received priority closure. Access points were reportedly blocked with garbage to prevent passage.

Maids have approached UFERWAS to advocate for regulated crossing access until an underpass is constructed. The corporator confirmed the issue persists across multiple railway sections.
