Water Shortage Hits Kapadia Nagar as BMC Blames Illegal Pumps

Kapadia Nagar, a 24-building residential complex in Kurla West’s L ward, has faced acute water shortages for at least two months. Residents say four buildings at a time can go days without water. The complex has 732 apartments and nearly 5,000 residents; it was built in 1987.

Residents and BMC water department officials allege that booster motors installed illegally beside the main pipeline by residents of 6–7 buildings divert supply from buildings farther away. BMC says the complex receives the prescribed 135 litres per person per day and will disconnect the motors, with penal action if shortages continue. Residents suspect inadequate mains pressure.

Residents said they spent more than ₹87 lakh on tankers and other temporary measures; one building society spent over ₹60,000 on tankers in 10 days. The shortage has prompted tenants to move out and affected apartment owners’ earnings. BMC officials inspected the site on Monday after residents complained to newly elected L ward corporator Saeeda Khan.

The road is almost as wide as a four-lane road, but its entry and exit on the university side are only about one lane wide, making the route difficult to locate and access.

SCLR Extension Aims to Cut Mumbai Travel Time by 45 Minutes

The Santa Cruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR), opened in 2014 with Mumbai’s first double-decker flyover, connects Kapadia Nagar on CST Road to Amar Mahal Junction on the Eastern Express Highway. Congestion, particularly around Vakola, prompted the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to plan an extension. Construction began in 2016 but was delayed by defence land acquisition and compensation negotiations between the Ministry of Defence and the BMC; significant portions are complete.

The extension is intended to bypass Vakola Junction and provide direct connectivity between the Western and Eastern Express Highways. Once open, it is expected to cut travel time by approximately 45 minutes and improve access to Bandra-Kurla Complex and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Transport expert Vivek Pai warned that rising vehicle numbers could offset the benefits within a decade, as he says happened with the original SCLR, designed to serve until 2050. He said road construction alone will not solve congestion and called for vehicle-ownership regulations. The upcoming Goregaon Mulund Link Road is also intended to connect Mumbai’s east and west.
