Chira Bazar Families Await MHADA Transit Homes After Building Collapse

Seventeen families displaced by Chunniwala Building’s collapse are still waiting for keys to allotted Ghodapdeo transit homes, with MHADA postponing relocation until after Anant Chaturdashi.

Seventeen families, many staying with relatives for nearly three weeks, were told on September 4 that they would receive keys to allotted transit homes at Ghodapdeo only after Anant Chaturdashi. Some residents said they had been displaced for 20 days and had completed the process twice. MHADA officials had initially promised on August 31 to move them within three days. Residents said officials cited staff shortages due to Ganesh festival duties; with the final day of idol immersion falling on a Saturday, they expected an update no earlier than September 8 or 9. MHADA officials were unavailable for comment.

Lodha Seeks ₹5 Crore for Teen Batti Retaining Wall Reinforcement

Mangal Prabhat Lodha has sought ₹5 crore from his MLA fund to rebuild a retaining wall after heavy rain caused its partial collapse at Teen Batti.

A retaining wall at Teen Batti partially collapsed on Monday after heavy rainfall; no injuries or property damage were reported. Maharashtra minister and BJP legislator Mangal Prabhat Lodha wrote to the Mumbai city collector seeking ₹5 crore from his MLA fund to build a replacement wall, warning that delay could pose further risks. The damaged section is on a route to official residences of the chief minister, deputy chief minister, governor and municipal commissioner.

MHADA appointed a structural consultant to assess the hill’s stability; a survey was conducted Tuesday. Separately, MHADA began demolishing the decades-old cessed building Ruby Hill 47 on Walkeshwar Road, citing structural risks. Displaced tenants were offered temporary accommodation in Ghodapdeo, Byculla, but some fear they may not be allowed to return. Mobile antennas on other Ruby Hill structures were removed to reduce structural load.

Malabar Hill residents have demanded a geological survey. A proposed 14-storey building with three basements at Teen Batti, near Raj Bhavan, was halted after the BMC issued a stop-work notice last month.
