BJP MLA Debashis Dhar said permanent work to address waterlogging in Rajpur-Sonarpur municipality will begin after Puja. He discussed measures with irrigation department officials to drain rainwater from municipal wards using a special method.
Water drains through the Bidyadhari River and Tolly’s Nullah, but the town is now lower than surrounding areas. Houses and shops built over canals in nearby panchayat areas obstruct drainage and should be removed, Dhar said, adding that experts and modern methods would be needed.
Heavy rain and low-pressure systems regularly flood parts of Garia, Boral, Sonarpur and Subhasgram. Dhar also expressed concern about plastic being discarded indiscriminately.
