CUMTA, Greater Chennai Corporation and Greater Chennai Traffic Police plan to implement Smart Parking Management Plan pilot in Anna Nagar from September. Study found over 60% of road space in some parts is encroached by haphazard parking, reducing pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Pilot project details:

  • 2,000 parking slots marked: 70% on major roads (2nd, 3rd, 6th Avenues), 30% on internal roads (11th-13th Main Roads)
  • Average 5,000 vehicles parked daily, including 3,000+ during peak hours
  • Parking prohibited within 20 metres of bus stops and 100 metres of schools
  • Designated pick-up and drop-off bays at key locations

Charges:

  • ₹60 per hour for trucks
  • ₹40 for cars
  • ₹20 for two-wheelers

Enforcement:

  • 100 trained marshals in two shifts, covering ~500 metres each
  • Body cameras and surveillance tools
  • Wheel clamping after three hours non-payment; towing after six hours under Motor Vehicles Act 1988
