Residents and conservationists seek Biodiversity Heritage Site status for the four-acre Agaramthen Sacred Grove near Chennai, citing its rich biodiversity of 222 species.

Key facts

Located about eight km southeast of Tambaram Junction, the sacred grove is one of few surviving sacred groves in Greater Chennai region. Revered as abode of Kanni Amman, supports local communities including nearby Irula settlement.

Recent biodiversity survey recorded 222 species: 102 plant species, 60 birds, 23 reptiles and amphibians, seven mammals, 30 butterfly species. Study conducted by conservationists Thirumurugan Vedagiri, Patrisha, Krishnaveni and Karthy under guidance of G. Gnanasekaran (Madras Christian College) and Nehru Prabakaran (Wildlife Institute of India).
