Thirty-seven plywood shops in Wazir Nagar reportedly lack fire safety certificates, while residents say hazardous storage continues despite court directions to the MCD.
Key facts
Thirty-seven plywood shops in Gali No. 7, Wazir Nagar, operate on ground floors and in basements without fire safety certificates, an RTI filed by a resident last year found. Basements and parking spaces reportedly hold plywood, timber, paints, varnish and thinner, while families live above, many with PNG connections. Residents say minor fires have occurred and some families have moved away; loading and unloading reportedly starts at 4 am.
The area’s RWA filed a plea in the Delhi High Court about a year ago, alleging the commercial storage violates the Master Plan of Delhi 2021, the DMC Act and the DDA Act. After surveying the area, the MCD directed properties in an August 2025 status report to stop misuse within 48 hours or face sealing. At a January 2026 hearing, the court sought a fresh MCD action report; none was filed. On February 26, the court directed the MCD to pass a speaking order within six weeks. The RWA president said no order had been issued nearly two months later.
